GYE Timeline
1900s:
Loss of habitat and extermination programs lead to the endangerment of wolves in the United States.
1973:
Rocky Mountain Wolf is listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is designated as one of three recovery areas.
1995 - 1997:
41 wild wolves from Canada and NW Montana were released in Yellowstone. Wolves population began to leave the GYE where they are less protected. These unprotected wolves risk being killed by humans.
2020:
25th anniversary since wolves returned to Yellowstone.
2009 - 2024:
The population size of wolves fluctuates between 83 and 123 wolves in the national park. As of January 2024, there are at least 124 wolves in the park.
