Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Timeline

1970s:

The number of grizzly bears in the GYE is estimated to be about 136.

1975:

Grizzly bears are listed as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. This was due as the species was reduced to about 2% of its former range.

1993:

The Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan was established to try and get the grizzly bear off the threatened species list.

2000 - 2002:

A Conservation Strategy is established to further efforts in getting the Grizzly Bear off the threatened species list.

2007 - 2018:

Legal battles ensue on the delisting and listing of the grizzly bear on the threatened species list.

2022:

The number of grizzly bears in the GYE was estimated to be around 965. This is according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service yearly report.
